The Palm Sunday Catholic service is a Christian holy day that commemorates the procession to Jerusalems’s Temple. The first century AD event was when Jesus entered into Jerusalem, riding on an ass and proclaiming “Blessed be he who cometh in the name of Lord”. It has been observed for centuries by Christians all over the world as one of three great pilgrimages during Christmastide alongside Maundy Thursday and Easter.
The service is usually held in the morning on the Sunday before Easter. It consists of a procession where palm leaves are blessed and then distributed to the congregation after being blessed. The tradition of blessing palms on this day goes back to at least the 10th century.
Palm Sunday 2024 Readings
The next day, Sunday, March 24, 2024, the Solemnity of the Annunciation will be celebrated. This is a Holy Day of Obligation on which prayer and fasting are required. It is one of the oldest feasts in the Christian Church and honors the announcement to Mary by the Angel Gabriel that she would give birth to Jesus Christ (Eucharistic Congress).
